Saith Maen 'Seven Stones' Stone Row is located on the mountain (SN834154) above
Craig-yr-Nos country park in the upper Swansea Valley. This stone row is orientated
26 degrees east of magnetic north and is made up of 7 standing stones. The northernmost
stone, stone 1, is 64 inches high, 33 inches wide and 10 inches thick. Stone 2 is
recumbent and is 88 inches high, 28 inches wide and 7 inches thick. Stone 3 is 40
inches high, 34 inches wide and 12 inches thick. Stone 4 is recumbent and is 112 inches
high, 43 inches wide and 12 inches thick. Stone 5 is 33 inches high, 33 inches wide and
11 inches thick. Stone 6 is 33 inches high, 33 inches wide and 7 inches thick. Stone 7
is 33 inches high, 28 inches wide and 10 inches thick. All the stones are derived from
the local carboniferous limestone except stone 3 which is old red sandstone. The land
around the row has numerous sink holes caused by the collapse of limestone caverns in
the cave system below. Some of these smaller sink holes appear to have been altered
to a tear-drop shape with stone lined entrances. These could possibly be burial sites.
One of these is approx 150 feet south of the stone row with the entrance facing north
orientated 10 degrees west of magnetic north. Another nearby faces south and is
orientated 26 degrees west of magnetic north.
