MAEN LLIA

Maen Llia viewed from the west.

This magnificent menhir (SN924192) is located at the north end of the valley of the Avon Llia near the village of Ystradfellte, Powys. It stands approximately 7 feet and is orientated along a north-south axis. It is derived from the local 'Old Red Sandstone' and is peppered with small quartz pebbles. The north facing edge is flattened with the south facing edge tapering sharply. These photos were taken in August 99, late in the afternoon, the sun was low on the horizon as is indicated by the shadows seen in some of the photos. I took a series of shots moving clockwise around the stone starting from the western side.
