GWAL-Y-FILIAST

Gwal-y-Filiast Burial Chamber viewed from the south.

Gwal-y-Filiast (The Greyhound's Lair) also known as Bwrdd Arthur (Arthurs Table) or Dolwilym is located on a wooded plateau (SN 170256) high above the river Taf and 1.5km southwest of Llanglydwen in Carmarthenshire. The surrounding woodland prevents a clear view of the river valley below, but in its original state it must have offered magnificant views of the surrounding countryside. The burial chamber is made up of four uprights supporting a large wedge shaped capstone. It is opened on the southern downhill side and is orientated North 60 degrees East. This opened side may have originally been blocked by another stone. Two stones on the East side of the tomb have been interpreted as a sill for a passage grave. The tomb is dated as neolithic approx 4,000yrs BC.
