GRAYHILL STONE CIRCLE

Grayhill Stone Circle looking northwest..

Grayhill Stone Circle (ST437935) is located on a hilltop 6miles west of Chepstow, Gwent with a magnificent view of the Severn Estuary. The site is mostly in ruin with many of the original stones removed. Burl has interpreted this site as a cairn-circle with much of the central burial cairn removed. The circle is 10 metres diameter with 12 of the original kerbstones remaining, many of them touching end to end. A large stone, 97 inches high, 29 inches wide and 14 inches thick lies fallen in the eastern part of the circle, and was originally aligned north-south. A second smaller fallen stone is located at the western part of the circle and was originally aligned N 54 degrees E. These stones were said to be part of the central burial cist. However the great difference in height between them means that one of them, or both were not support stones for any capstone. Just outside the circle to the northeast is a standing stone 67 inches high, 35 inches wide and 19 inches thick. East of this stone at a distance of 12 ft is another smaller standing stone. N 50 degrees W of the fallen stone in the eastern part of the circle, at a distance of 180 ft, is a large standing stone 90 inches high. The alignment between these stones coincides with the midsummer Sunset. The whole of this site is overgrown with vegetation but the remains of many stone cairns and other structures are scattered all around.
