PARC LE BREOS BURIAL CHAMBER

Parc le Breos burial chamber viewed from the south.

Parc le Breos burial chamber is located in a wooded valley (SS53728983) north of the village of Parkmill, Gower. The tomb design belongs to the Severn-Cotswold Group. The orientation of the structure is 5 degrees west of south. It is 22.2 metres long, 12.4 metres wide at the south end, tapering to 6.3 metres at the north end. The frontal stonework consists of a double wall with the inner wall 0.8 metres behind the outer wall. This outer wall is 2.5 metres at the south end decreasing to 0.5 metres at the north end. The central gallery is 6 metres long by 1 metre wide with two pairs of transeptal chambers, approx 1.6 metres long and 1 metre wide, orientated east-west. The roof of the gallery is missing but probably consisted of large limestone slabs over which the cairn was constructed. The burial site was first located in 1869 when it was plundered and robbed of stone. Bone fragments belonging to 24 individuals were recovered. All were adults except for three, also two rims of neolithic pottery. The site was re-excavated in 1960-61 by R J C Atkinson.
